Waking Up

May 3, 2020

Winter is a time of quiet. The world slows. In the country it is so much quieter and now, in the city - in this time of covid life is slower and we are waking up to ourselves. As our environment slows, stops even, there is less movement, less stimulation, less noise - internally and externally. That which is in motion is noticed more readily. Our attention is not so pulled in so many directions. We hear the song of the cardinals, the low flying flapping of geese, cormorants, seagulls. The squirrels come closer. And we can see so much more than when we are rushing headlong into the future.

This period brings with it a greater awareness of our internal thoughts and emotions and the movement of bodily sensations. Some of this is a pleasure and some of it distressing and we have the opportunity now to investigate, to get to know ourselves in a different way. Sometimes we are anxious, down, lost, peaceful, joyful. There is so much movement inside, but even that is slowing - especially when we can stop, look, listen, take a breath and rest in the changing nature of experience; the unreliability of life that we are recognizing now. There may be freedom in the acceptance of uncertainty if we can learn to let go.
